Felix Adupa Ongwech, a member of the NRM party, criticized those who had misused government funds while simultaneously denouncing the party.
Two notable individuals have been apprehended for misappropriation of PDM funds in Amolatar. During a meeting on Monday, May 27, 2024, at the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Amolatar, the district leadership recommended the immediate arrest of those responsible for mishandling the PDM fund. RDC Amolatar, Francis Okello Odoki Rwotlonyo, disclosed that an audit revealed certain SACCO leaders had allocated amounts ranging from five to fifteen million shillings to themselves, with some funds even going to unregistered members.
The RDC emphasized the intention to apprehend individuals who had illicitly received money under the guise of distributing PDM funds, including parish chiefs and SACCO chairpersons. "I will arrest individuals who have been extorting money from beneficiaries in the name of providing them with PDM funds," stated the RDC.
Chief Administrative Officer Amolatar, Paul Mbiwa, noted that despite significant government investment, the mismanagement of funds by SACCO leaders necessitated audit inquiries. Mbiwa added that parish chiefs and Community Development Officers (CDOs) found guilty of malpractice would face arrest and suspension. He further confirmed that two parish chiefs and one CDO had already returned the embezzled funds.
Geoffrey Occen Kiring, the District Chairperson of Amolatar, expressed bewilderment at their exclusion from the PDM program. He recalled instances of misappropriation, such as the arrest of individuals in Aputi for giving money to an unsound person, underscoring the need for accountability. Kiring urged anyone involved in the mismanagement of funds to surrender themselves to the nearest police station, emphasizing that the funds were intended to assist the less fortunate but had been diverted to civil servants and SACCO leaders. He cited an example of a woman in Muntu who received 14 million shillings, an amount that could have benefitted 14 individuals.
Felix Adupa Ongwech, a member of the NRM party, criticized those who had misused government funds while simultaneously denouncing the party. Adupa highlighted public grievances regarding high-ranking officials mishandling public funds and pledged that all individuals involved in the misappropriation of government funds would face legal consequences, urging them to surrender to the authorities promptly.
The RDC confirmed that the detained individuals are Adir Denis, a mobile operator in Amolatar town, and Nancy Akello, wife of the Mayor of Amolatar Town Council and also a mobile money operator. They will not be released and will be prosecuted in court. The RDC also added that there are 41 SACCOs that have been summoned to the police for investigation.
