According to authorities, a woman in Kyankwanzi District lit herself on fire in a home, killing at least six family members in the process.

Mariam Mukankubito has already been identified by authorities.

According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala, “On Thursday, Mukankubito spent a night indulging in alcoholic beverages with other family members at her own expense. At around 3:56 a.m. (Friday), while still inside the house with others, she locked the door with padlocks, doused herself in gasoline, and set herself on fire. The fire spread throughout the entire house, killing six people and injuring five others.

Pamela Namubiru, aged 7, and Patrick Kisakye, aged 2, were also killed in the event in Musalaba Village in Masode-Kalagi Town Council. They were Mukankubito’s children.

A person only known as Rwabuhihi also lost two of his young children, Gerald Barley and Leticia Nsinga, in the fire along with Julian Mukansime.

Nyabutono Mukambabuka, 32, Ruth Namata, 16, and Mumbeja, 10, are among those hurt.

The police reported that the two other victims, who had not yet been identified, were 32 and 7, respectively.

The fact that the injured are currently receiving medical attention at Kiboga Hospital was reported by Kawala, who partially connected the occurrence to social unrest.

The six bodies, including Mukankubito’s, have been sent to Kiboga General Hospital mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue, she said late Friday. “The scene of the crime has been visited and documented,” she added.
