Why the President Emphasizes Wealth Creation in Uganda

                            By Mitala Umar

President HE Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has repeatedly urged Ugandans to focus on wealth creation through commercial agriculture with “ekibaro” (calculation).

“Some people don’t know our history well, but this part of the world has always been about wealth creation. In the villages, if you don’t work for wealth, they call you a vagabond,” he said.

The President made this appeal on Thursday, February 29, 2024, during his Presidential Address on Wealth Creation at State Lodge, Nakasero.

President Museveni highlighted that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government prioritizes economic policies and wealth creation. They have consistently encouraged people to become wealth creators and reject sectarian politics.

Why Wealth Creation is Important for Uganda

1. Poverty Reduction: Wealth creation provides income-generating opportunities, helping lift people out of poverty.

2. Economic Growth: It boosts overall economic growth by increasing GDP and creating a stable, prosperous economy.

3. Job Creation: Stimulates job opportunities across various sectors, reducing unemployment and improving livelihoods.

4. Infrastructure Development: Funds infrastructure projects such as roads, schools, and hospitals, improving living standards and economic development.

5. Investment in Human Capital: Increased wealth allows investment in education, healthcare, and skills development, critical for sustainable development.

6. Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Encourages entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering a dynamic business environment and driving technological advancements.

7. Social Stability: Reducing poverty and increasing wealth can lead to social stability and cohesion.

8. Global Competitiveness: Enhances Uganda's competitiveness on the global stage, attracting foreign investment and improving international trade relations.

Key Initiatives Promoting Wealth Creation in Uganda

1. Operation Wealth Creation (OWC): Launched in 2013, OWC aims to eradicate household poverty by providing agricultural inputs and technical support to farmers, increasing productivity and promoting income-generating activities in rural areas.

2. Youth Livelihood Programme: Targets young people by providing startup capital and skills training for income-generating activities such as agriculture, small-scale enterprises, and vocational skills development.

3. Microfinance and SACCOs: Promotes the establishment of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) and microfinance institutions to provide financial services to small-scale entrepreneurs and farmers, facilitating access to credit and savings.

4. Industrialization and Value Addition: Supports industrialization and value addition to agricultural products, promoting agro-processing industries for both export and local consumption.

5. Infrastructure Development: Invests in infrastructure like roads, electricity, and water supply to improve market accessibility and reduce transportation costs, boosting economic activities and wealth creation.

6. Promotion of Tourism: Enhances the tourism sector to attract domestic and international tourists, generating income and employment opportunities through wildlife tourism, cultural tourism, and ecotourism.

7. Skills Development and Education: Focuses on improving education and skills development to equip the workforce with necessary skills for employment and entrepreneurship, enhancing productivity and income levels.

8. Parish Development Model: A recent initiative for wealth creation and socio-economic transformation, providing billions of shillings to Ugandans to transform their households.

Conclusion

These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to wealth creation in Uganda, emphasizing agriculture, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, and human capital development. Wealth creation is essential for addressing poverty, fueling economic growth, and investing in human capital, ultimately leading to a more prosperous and stable society.
