Lira City MP Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero Advocates for Research to Enhance Child and Maternal Health
The Ministry of Health has signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Center for Child Health and Development (ICHAD) Brown School - Washington University in St. Louis, and AfriChild Centre, focusing on child and adolescent health. Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng emphasized the long-term benefits of this collaboration for Uganda's children.
ICHAD Brown School aims to reduce poverty and improve public health in low-resource communities through research and policy development. The AfriChild Centre, established in 2013 at Makerere University, addresses child well-being and research gaps, linking research to policy and practice for better child-focused responses.
This partnership will utilize evidence-based research to tackle Uganda's demographic challenges, aiming to turn them into opportunities for socio-economic development. Dr. Fred Ssewamala, Executive Director of ICHAD Brown School, highlighted the collaboration's focus on social determinants of health to combat poverty and improve education for children.
AfriChild Centre has previously collaborated with various Ugandan government ministries, including Education and Sports, Gender, Labour and Social Development, and now Health. The recent census showed 73.2% of Uganda's 45.9 million population are children and youth, underscoring the need for such initiatives.
Dr. Aceng noted the significant challenges faced by Uganda’s young population due to poverty and educational disparities, and expressed hope that this partnership will support the Ministry of Health's strategic objectives.
