Minister Hon. Dr. Aceng Shines During National Day of Physical Exercises
The MUBS sports ground in Nakawa was bustling with thousands of Ugandans who participated in the National Day of Physical Activity organized by the Ministry of Health with support from the World Health Organization.
Since its inception in 2018, the National Day of Physical Activity has been a significant initiative by the NRM government under the health sector. It aims to protect Ugandans from lifestyle diseases, technically known as non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, cardiovascular and lung diseases, cancer, and diabetes.
The event featured a variety of activities, such as 10 km and 5 km runs, a 5 km walk, aerobics, and cycling. It was attended by the top leadership of the Ministry of Health and the Country Representative of the World Health Organization in Uganda.
Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Lira City Woman MP and Minister of Health, led the physical activities starting at 6:30 am on Sunday. She advised Ugandans to exercise regularly to reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases, which are among the top five health burdens in the country. This year’s theme was "Exercise is Medicine. Do Regular Exercise to Combat NCDs."
Dr. Aceng, known for her physical fitness and active lifestyle, has been a strong advocate for health. She encourages Ugandans to eat healthy foods, avoid tobacco, reduce alcohol intake, and exercise regularly to live to their full potential.
She also praised Lira Regional Referral Hospital for organizing regular runs for a healthy Lango in response to her initiatives.
"Your health is your responsibility," she emphasized.
